Very cool that you're getting the chance to do that. Goes to show that you never know what will come your way when you do something. Perhaps you've started a new trend in promo videos and can continue to reap the benefits. Have fun and keep us in ...

Here's another update - I tweeted with Anny Chih today. She is off to Australia for 5 1/2 months. Didn't get much more info other than that from her - she seems to be running around in prep for leaving today! A post in May from her web site says s...

Adrian, good to see you on here. I started tuning into Ben again but did not know about the others and what may be happening for them with OT. Though I did read about the Japanese finalist somewhere. Thanks for sharing all that info. Life sure mus...

Me!

Hi there, I am the creator of this community and obviously an applicant for the Best Job in the World. Please watch my official video here - http://www.islandreefjob.com/applicants/watch/3l7y0Rt49Kw

I am currently between jobs - that's why I have the time to dedicate to this site, spend time on twitter/facebook/youtube/ and the blogosphere recruiting other applicants, and dreaming about being the Island Caretaker.

I am between jobs out of choice....I recently moved back to Boston after living for 3 years in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. I left my cushy job as a mobile software product manager to go and live an island life! I certainly was not retiring yet and thus needed to work there, which I did as a real estate agent. Now I am not your typical real estate agent, no disrespect for that profession, but I did that there because that is one of the only ways to really make a living there as it is a 3rd world country. I ended up having a fantastic time doing that as I got to essentially scout out the best beachfront on the North coast and Samana Peninsula for clients. Thus, I prefer to refer to my title there as Prime Beachfront Real Estate Scout. :-)

During my 3 years there, I loved living in a warm climate by the beach, befriending all sorts of expats from other countries who also lived there, experiencing life in another country with all its differences in culture etc. , and blogging about it all - Island Time in DR. However I knew that I did not want to spend the rest of my life there and so I returned to Boston, MA, where I had been living before (and for most of my life).

I am very interested in social media - i.e., communities like this, Twitter, blogging etc.

Traveling is of course a huge hobby of mine - some of the photos I have up on this site are from the 3 month backpacking trip I took to India, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bali after leaving the DR. I also did a 3 month backpacking trip to Thailand and Australia too back in 2001 and countless other trips to various places in Europe, the Caribbean, and the US throughout my life.

I am very active and like to snowboard, hike, snowshoe, play tennis, snorkel, and dive.

Here are my blogs:

I'd like to welcome everyone who joins and look forward to hearing your tales and seeing your photos!

Wow ... I guess I missed your comment (Apr 6th or something). A month ago. That's practically in my "Pre-Twitter Epoch", it's so old.

I did search for David's blog again, found the article and re-read the earlier comments, plus mine and those that followed.

Every story has two sides. I was reluctant, initially, to be critical of the BJITW campaign, for fear of sounding like "sour grapes". It was a difficult row to hoe, to start, but as time has gone on, I'm finding much separation between objective criticism and personal disappointment (in not being selected).

TBJITW has such a "feel good" component, that many people don't/won't talk about the mistakes, seeding of videos, lies, bias or anything else negative.

At the end of the day, no matter who is selected IC - (down to just a few hours before the announcement now) - several facts remain:

1) It was a ground-breaking marketing effort that leveraged new social media tools and will be used as case-study henceforth.

2) There was a lot that TQ did right.

3) There was a lot that TW did wrong.

4) The effect on the bottom line - increasing tourism numbers (both in terms of visitors, revenue and enticing new visitors) has yet to be seen. (Personally, I'm thinking it'll go down in history as a "success", regardless, with pundits saying, "even though the numbers were down, it was b/c of overriding global economic effects that had nothing to do with the campaign." - ish)

Unlike most media agencies, however, I'll remain "interested" in the story, (because I like to see things through to the end and don't necessarily jump onto the next "hot topic" bandwagon).

Darn ... this became more of a blog post and less of a comment, eh? :-p

Cheers,
-stk

thanks so much Susie, I feel a bit guilty joining this late in the piece - I've been visiting since before the the top 50 announcement, but was put off joining by a couple of discussion's and then have been tied up in work pretty much ever since. Thanks for the hard work you've put into this site - its been a fantastic tool for people to communicate and share info/theories, and especially a great platform for everyone that's felt a bit isolated in all of this.

Hey Susie! I'm eventually going to get around to writing a SXSW post, and when I do, I'll definitely re-post it here. Ha, I have such a backlog of experiences to write about, I hardly know where to begin :)

Never mind about Matt, where's Wally (Osborne)?

OK, Sue, there are clearly some bugs in the NING software. First, if a member responds to one of my discussions or writes on my comment wall it gets into my recent activity list but I do not seem to be able to erase the references if I want to.

Next, if the member leaves the community, the activity reference remains.

Currently Wally is everywhere to be seen but nowhere to be found! In fact it sounds like a riddle or a Zen Master in my soup joke.

Hi Susie,
Thanks for the beautiful comment on my video. I'm so glad it took you away from your work for a good 3mins:) It's getting to that beautiful time of the year again up here, the coral is spawning, the whale sharks are coming, the weather is pristine and Im looking forward to more filming. I've decided to do a couple of mini docs and will be sure to post them up when I can :) How have you been?

Haha, yes, that WAS me creepily lurking in the background! Busted!
Thank you for the compliments, and I look forward to meeting everybody on this site (regardless of if I feel like I know them already, haha!)

Hi Susie, hope you had a good time snowboarding. And it's a great community you built based around two of my greatest passions: video and travel, plus I feel it's a really active community. I am on facebook and myspace and all that but kind of lost interest, but I am frequently on here to see what the latest buzz is, so thanks for building it and hope it keeps growing. Cheers tom

Ah thanks Susie! Yeah the last few days have been great fun! We set up beneath Big Ben and spent the afternoon campaigning as a team, really chilled! This community you've set up is very cool - nice to see so many of the applicants have set up shop in one place! I'm gonna go finish setting up my profile here, but I hope to speak to you again soon!
